Have you ever wanted to learn how to roll a kayak? Winter is the perfect time to acquire valuable paddling skills that can be applied when kayak season is in full swing.
Adventure Bound is fortunate to have Don Boehmer as our paddle sports manager. Don is the former owner of Highwater Hobbies in Machias and Vice President of the Zoar Valley Paddling Club. He conducts two weekly pool sessions where he teaches paddlers the following techniques:
- Basic paddle strokes, including forward, sweep and back strokes.
- High and low braces
- Sweep rolls and backdeck rolls
- Rescue techniques
All pool sessions are sponsored by the Zoar Valley Paddling Club. Adventure Bound provides boats to demo free for the first two pool sessions. After that, there is a charge of $20 for boat use. The pools are relatively warm. But most participants choose to wear a wetsuit or a shortie to stay warm. Adventure Bound also carries nose plugs, which are strongly recommended, as are helmets.
Pool sessions are held at Pioneer High School every Wednesday night from 7:30-9:30. Pioneer High School is located at 12145 County Line Road, Yorkshire, NY. The cost is $5 for Zoar Valley Paddling Club members or $10 for non-members.
Don also holds pool sessions at Maryvale High School every Friday night from 6:30-8:30. Maryvale High School is located at 1050 Maryvale Drive, Cheektowaga, NY. The cost is $10 for Zoar Valley Paddling Club members or $15 for non-members.
Please call Don in advance at 404-274-5216 or stop by Adventure Bound if a boat or other equipment are needed.
